Disclaimer & map data attribution

Last updated: 5 August 2026

MapVectorizer produces illustrations of places, not survey documents. This page explains what that means in practice: how accurate the data is, what you must not use it for, and how to credit it properly.

In one line: exports are for design and illustration. Never use them for navigation, safety, engineering or legal purposes — and always credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" on published work.

1. No warranty on the data

The geometry in your exports comes from OpenStreetMap, a crowd-sourced database maintained by volunteers worldwide. It is supplied to us — and by us to you — "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that any export is accurate, current, complete, or fit for a particular purpose.

Concretely, expect that:

  • Coverage and detail vary enormously by region. A European city centre may be mapped building by building while a rural area nearby is a handful of lines.
  • Data can be out of date. Roads, buildings and coastlines change before the map does.
  • Features may be missing, duplicated, misclassified, or mistagged by contributors.
  • Our rendering simplifies geometry, drops features below a zoom threshold, and clips at tile edges — all deliberate cartographic choices that trade precision for legibility.
  • Very small or water-only areas can produce sparse or empty exports.
  • Projected coordinates (Web Mercator) distort area and distance, increasingly so towards the poles. Do not measure off an export.

2. Uses the exports are not suitable for

You must not use MapVectorizer exports for:

  • Navigation of any kind — road, marine, aviation, or pedestrian routing.
  • Emergency response, evacuation planning, or any safety-critical system.
  • Engineering, construction, excavation, or utility location.
  • Determining property lines, cadastral boundaries, jurisdiction, or any legal boundary.
  • Regulatory, permitting, insurance, or environmental-assessment submissions requiring certified cartography.
  • Any decision where an error in the geography could cause injury, loss, or legal exposure.

Where accuracy of that kind matters, use official survey data from the relevant national mapping agency.

3. Borders, names and disputed territories

Borders, territorial claims, and place names shown in an export reflect how OpenStreetMap contributors have recorded them. They are not a statement, endorsement, or political position by MapVectorizer regarding the legal status of any territory, boundary, or name. If your work is published where a particular depiction is legally required, check and adjust it yourself before publishing.

4. Map data licence and attribution

OpenStreetMap data is licensed under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0. It is free to use commercially — the licence asks for credit in return, which is standard practice across the design industry.

What to include

The credit is not baked into your export. The editor shows the attribution on screen while you work, but the SVG and PNG files you download do not carry it — adding it to the published piece is your job. Place the following on or near your published work; a caption, a credits page, a colophon, or an "about" section all qualify:

© OpenStreetMap contributors

For digital work, link the credit to openstreetmap.org/copyright. For print, the text alone is enough. The credit should be about as prominent as any other credit you carry for imagery or typography.

Free exports

If you publish work made with a free export you did not pay for, please credit MapVectorizer alongside OpenStreetMap — for example: "Map: MapVectorizer · Data © OpenStreetMap contributors". Commercial publishing on free credits also asks for one credit purchase first; see section 4 of the Terms of Service.

Share-alike

The ODbL's share-alike condition applies to the database. A rendered image or a styled SVG drawing of a map is a "produced work" — you can license and sell that however you like, and you do not have to open-source your artwork. If instead you extract, modify and redistribute the underlying data itself, the ODbL requires you to share those changes under the same licence. Read the full licence if you plan to redistribute data rather than pictures.

5. Your own responsibility

You are responsible for reviewing every export before you publish it, for confirming it is accurate enough for its intended use, for including the attribution above, and for complying with local law in the place you publish.

6. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, MapVectorizer is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss — including reprint costs, production delays, lost profits, lost clients, or damage to reputation — arising from the use of the service or of an exported file. This does not limit liability that cannot be limited by law, and does not affect the statutory rights of consumers. The full liability terms are in section 8 of the Terms of Service.

7. External links

This site links to third-party websites, including OpenStreetMap and our payment provider. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, availability, or privacy practices.

8. Questions
